The health benefits of Coconut oil

The reason coconut oil has been described as the healthiest oil on earth is due to the fact that it is composed predominately of medium-chain fatty acids, also called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs).  Most vegetable or seed oils are comprised of long-chain fatty acids or long-chain triglycerides (LCTs).  LCTs are large molecules that are difficult for your body to break down so are predominantly stored as fat.  MCTs are smaller so are easily digested and burned for energy.
MCTs actually boost your metabolism, helping your body use fat for energy – so instead of storing fat it can actually help you become leaner.  In addition to weight loss, boosting your metabolism will improve energy, accelerate healing and support your immune function.  MCTs do not have the negative effect on cholesterol that LCTs do and actually help to protect against heart disease (MCTs lower the risk of both atherosclerosis and heart disease).
Other health benefits of eating coconut oil include boosting your thyroid and enhancing physical or athletic performance. Also, nearly half the fat in coconut oil is lauric acid which your body converts in to monolaurin.  Monolaurin has been shown to have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoa properties.
Uses of Coconut oil
  • Coconut oil is the only oil that is stable enough to cook with because it is highly heat resistant.
  • Coconut oil makes a delicious and healthy alternative to butter.
  • Coconut oil is even good for your skin and can be applied topically for anti-ageing and regenerative effects.
Many people tell me they cook with extra-virgin olive oil, thinking it is a ‘healthy oil’, which indeed it is if used as a salad dressing.  But olive oil should not be used for cooking because when heated all the health benefits of olive oil are destroyed.
So do your body a favour and get a jar of fresh, organic, health supporting coconut oil which can be found in good health food shops or alternatively bought from the Natural Dispensary on 01453 757792 or  Quote CW010 for a discount.
